Progress Update: Trail Stewardship Enhancement Project

Posted on Jan 16, 2025 by Mountain Bike BC

Moutain Biking BC, aka Western Canada Mountain Bike Tourism Association (MBTA), is proud to share updates on the Trail Stewardship Enhancement Project, a key initiative funded by the Destination Development Fund (DDF) through the British Columbia Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. This project aims to foster globally competitive destinations, strengthen the year-round visitor economy, and enhance community vibrancy through sustainable and inclusive tourism practices. Here’s a look at our progress so far.

Trail Information Kiosks and Signage

As part of this initiative, we have successfully installed all the trail kiosks. The next phase involves finalizing content for each side of the kiosks - one side for land manager content, the other side for community trail stewardship information. Sign production has been awarded to Inter-Mtn. Enterprises. Additionally, we are working closely with Recreation Sites and Trails BC to confirm their content for the kiosks, ensuring alignment with the new Provincial Trail Signage Standards.

Regarding materials, the signs will be printed on a composite backing, paired with a graffiti-proof coating, providing a cost-effective solution while ensuring durability. Installation is scheduled for April–May, with production slated to begin in early March. Participating clubs will receive partial funding support to help offset costs, keeping club contributions to approximately 50% of the total signage expense.

Benefits of the Kiosk and Signage Component

  • Enhanced User Experience: Providing visitors and residents with detailed trail information for safe and respectful enjoyment.
  • Community Support: Encouraging trail users to support local organizations and businesses, thereby boosting community spending.
  • Local Partnerships: Creating opportunities for clubs to collaborate with local businesses for materials and labor.
  • Standardization and Safety: Establishing a consistent signage system aligned with Provincial standards, improving wayfinding and outlining trail conditions and difficulty levels.

Community Trails Impact Study

The Community Trails Impact Study is another integral component of the project designed to estimate trail user volumes and will distinguishing between residents and visitors using Mobile Location Analytic. This information will help mountain biking organizations demonstrate the economic and social value of their trail networks.

We recently launched the study and are hosting a second Zoom Information Session on January 21 with pilot communities to outline project requirements and commitments from interested clubs and trail organizations. This session will play a crucial role in shaping the work plan and achieving meaningful outcomes.

Dr. Farhad Moghimefar, BC Regional Innovation Chair in Tourism and Sustainable Rural Development & Professor in the Department of Recreation and Tourism Management at Vancouver Island University will lead additional meetings on February 25 and March 11 to finalize survey dates and refine questions based on ongoing engagement. While our initial focus is on six pilot communities, we encourage and welcome participation from communities in all regions across the province to help shape a comprehensive and effective implementation model.

Looking Ahead

The Trail Stewardship Enhancement Project exemplifies Mountain Biking BC’s commitment to supporting sustainable trail development, fostering community partnerships, and enhancing the visitor experience. By combining improved infrastructure with actionable insights from data collection, this initiative is poised to leave a lasting impact on B.C.'s trail systems.

We’re excited to continue working with communities, clubs, and stakeholders to bring this project to fruition. Stay tuned for further updates as we move closer to our goals.
